Wikipedia states “the artist: William ("Bill") Mauldin (1921-2003) was an American editorial cartoonist who won 2 Pulitzer Prizes for his work. Early in Mauldin's career he became famous for his World War II cartoon series, Willie & Joe, depicting American soldiers. In addition to cartooning, Mauldin worked as a freelance writer. He also illustrated many articles for many popular magazines including Life, The Saturday Evening Post, and Sports Illustrated. One of Mauldin's most famous post-war cartoons, published in 1963 while working for the Chicago Sun Times, depicted the statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial, with his head in his hands reacting to the assassination of President Kennedy.”
